Why Did I Create Genki English?

Hello, I'm Richard Graham.

And when I was a kid, I hated school. I found it sooooo boring...

Then I spent 3 years teaching full-time in 3 Japanese schools. At first that was even worse. Students were sleeping, and not really learning anything. Just like it had for me, the traditional "chalk and talk" method of teaching was switching students off left, right and center.

So I transformed my way of teaching, I listened to what the kids were really wanting to say and tried teaching it in ways they really wanted to learn. The results were magical.

Just like you learn the lyrics to a favourite song or the latest baseball statistics, they learn Genki English because it's fun!

And when it’s fun, it becomes easy to learn new things!

That's where I found out my way of teaching had a name: "Genki", Japanese for "fun", "exciting" and "full of life".

After a lot of success on TV, magazines and newspapers and helping other teachers become "Genki", in the year 2000 I founded GenkiEnglish.com and started making the Genki English Teacher's Packs. Now they are used by millions of students in dozens of countries. It really works. And it's really easy to teach!

These days half of my time is spent being invited to give workshops and lectures for universities, education centers, boards of education, and schools around the world on how to really motivate students and get the best out of lessons using Genki English. The other half of my time is spent researching, developing, testing and refining new Genki teaching materials for you. Whilst everything works really well at the moment, I'm sure there are still more ways and better materials still to be made to make the next step up in teaching. Q: How soon can I get the package?
A: For the Download Pack - Soon! Click on the button, fill in your details and wait for your credit card to clear. This takes a few minutes. Then we email you a special link to download the files. If the email doesn't come straight away, check your junk mail folder. You'll also receive a username & password you can use to access the CD Owners Club straight away.

For the CD Pack we send them by express delivery everyday at 5PM. They usually take around 7 to 10 days to reach you.

Q: What exactly is in the CD Pack?
A: You get all the same songs and software as the Download Pack but on 10 CD / CDROMS. Put them in a CD Player to get the audio tracks, put them in a computer to get the software. Plus you also get 3 worksheet books, a teaching guide DVD & the Minicard book. Everything else you can download from the Owners Club area of the site. Personally I use the Download Pack though, it's the eco option and is much easier than carrying round a big box of CDs!

Q: How big are the Download Pack files?
A: The Songs Only file is big (220 Mb) and takes 20 to 30 minutes to download with broadband. The Songs & Software pack is even bigger at 720 MB. Please make sure you have a good, fast internet connection before ordering! I'd also recommend downloading them onto a 2GB memory stick to keep them safe.

Q: Do I need to pay any license fee or anything to use the songs in a class? Even if students pay to join the class?
A: No. The fee to use the materials in your class is included in the price. You don't need to pay any other fees.

Q: Can I copy the files for my students or a co-worker?
A: No. All the files are copyrighted and you may not pass them on to anyone else. However you can make print outs of the mini-cards and worksheets for your students. But not the songs nor software.

If your students would like to own the these, then if you buy the download pack, you can also use the special Student CD Pack discount.

Q: Can I copy the songs for my own use?
A: With the Download Pack, you can copy the songs to your mp3 player or burn them to CD for use in your own classroom. You just can't pass them on to anyone else.

Q: Can I install the Download Pack software pack on my laptop?
A: Yes. The basic price is for one license, so you can copy the software onto as many machines as you personally use as long as it's only used on one machine at once.

If you have a school and want to use the software on a server or on several machines together, please get in touch for the latest rates, they're very reasonable!

Q: Can I buy individual songs or a smaller set of songs?
A: We don't have any plans to offer these at the moment. If you do buy the download pack and we release an upgraded version in the future, we'll most probably have an offer for you where you can purchase the new materials at a special price.

Q: Can I hear any of the songs before I buy them?
A: Yes, of course! Just click on any of the song icons from the main page. Most of the songs have demo versions you can listen to online, as well as lesson plans and lots of ideas on how to use them in class.

Q: Is this just for kids? What age group are these materials aimed at?
A: Originally they were designed for, and work best for, final year of Kindergarten to 5th year of elementary school.

But many teachers have great success with children as young as 2, and even junior high school, senior high school and adult students. In fact we're now seeing many adults learning through Genki English because it's a lot more fun than traditional textbooks!

Q: Can I use this to teach myself or my child at home?
A: Yes indeed! There is a 3 step way of doing this.

Step 1 is to play the computer games to learn the English.
Step 2 is to sing the songs to help remember the English.
Step 3 is to print out minicards from the website to use the English with family and friends!

Q: How do I pay for the Genki English Teacher's Set?
A: You can either pay by "Paypal" or credit or debit card. And don’t worry, it's so secure and we don't see your credit card details, for the Download Pack everything is handled by Paypal ( they're owned by Ebay) and for the CD Pack everything is handled by CCNOW.

Q: Which to go for, the Teacher's Set or the Download Pack?
A: If you're in Japan, I'd say go for the CD Pack, there are the physical CDs in there and there's a good chance your school will pay for it.

If you're anywhere else in the world, I'd say go for the download pack. It's what I personally use myself and is the fastest and simplest way to go e.g. no customs problems, no waiting for the post to arrive etc. etc. You should be ready to go for tomorrow's lessons!
