As with old English, French and Spanish the days of the week are based on names of the planets. They also contain some of the most important kanji characters so are a good place to start. Mind you you might want to leave the middle one out for now!
= ge tsu yo u bi = Monday = Moon Day. 
= the Moon
= ka yo u bi = Tuesday = Mars Day ( e.g. Mardi Gras). 
= Fire
= su i yo u bi = Wednesday = Mercury Day. 
= Water
= mo ku yo u bi = Thursday = Jupiter Day. 
= Wood
= kin yo u bi = Friday = Venus Day. 
= Gold ( think of it as payday!)
= do yo u bi = Saturday = Saturn Day. 
= Ground or Earth
= ni chi yo u bi = Sunday = Sunday. 
= the Sun
