Hello,
I hope you had a nice holiday and welcome to 2008. You'd better get your
printer ready because there's lots to keep it busy this month...
1. Game of the Month: Zombie Game
This month's game comes from Rosebud in Germany:
I've been teaching the "What do you do?" theme this week and
playing the "Harry Potter" game with it. Only the little kids
couldn't remember what they were supposed to be and can't read to help
them memorise their job. So I came up with an activity so obvious I probably
don't even need to mention it. I told them we were going to play the zombie
game whereby they have to totally ignore everybody else with what they
were saying and only concentrate on walking around in a circle saying as
loudly as possible their job title.
I started off one child at a time saying their profession and added
the others into the circle until they were all walking round saying
their job with great confidence. Then I asked each one "What do you
do?" and if they said it correctly they left the circle, until all had
left. Then we moved onto the Harry Potter game, which they were really
good at.
2. Photo Real Flashcards
Photos can often get children, especially older ones, involved in the lesson
a lot more. The tricky bit is making sure the background doesn't distract
and that everyone knows which item it is we're talking about.
So this month we have a whole load of photo real flashcards to use as extra
vocab for the Genki English themes. They're in "pdf" format so
you can print them in any size and most of them look so good they'd be
cool as posters to put on the wall!

As usual if you'd like to see more of them then please let me know and
I'll see what I can do.
3. New Worksheet Books
Just before Christmas I uploaded a mini-book of "Snakes & Ladders"
worksheets for you. There'll be more of those in the coming weeks, and
there is also a new 50 page "Islands Worksheets Book". They're
pretty simple to play but are a nice review and are great for kids to take
home so parents can see how well their offspring are progressing.

Keep on eye out on my blog for another book of "Spaghetti Worksheets"
later in the week.
4. Winter Clothes Song
There isn't a song yet for the "Winter Clothes" theme, but it
is really popular at this time of year. Luckily forum member Tatanna in
Italy came up with the brilliant suggestion of using CD6's "Make a
Face" karaoke version with the following words:
We're going out
We're going out etc.
Put on your hat
Put on your scarf
Put on your coat
Put on your boots.
We're coming in
We're coming in etc
Take off .....
What a great idea!
You can find the flashcards and picture book on the menu page of GenkiEnglish.com.
5. And finally...
The new printable 2008 calendars are up on the site:

The remainder of this month, and next, I'm in sunny Portugal working on
lots of new materials. But hopefully I might be able to get out for a couple
of workshops. I'm also wanting to try out some new ideas, probably in a
smaller, say around 12 people, workshop setting. If you'd like to host
one of these anywhere in Europe then please get in touch, the flights in
Europe are so cheap at the moment it should be really inexpensive!
Be genki,
Richard
