Wow! Halloween Masks

Gaz has just sent in his latest creation, some amazing Halloween masks based on theΒ Trick or Treat song. My initial reaction was “Wow, please send more!” and sure enough he did, there are 13 in all!

Just look at these, what do you think?

Richard Graham

Hello, I'm Richard Graham. When I was a kid I found school to be sooooo boring... So I transformed my way of teaching. I listened to what the kids were really wanting to say and taught it in ways they really wanted to learn. The results were magical. Now I help teachers just like you teach amazing lessons and double your incomes!

    Wow!! GREAT!!

Gaz do you have black and white version of these masks?

    Please reply.

  4. Liza

Fabulous stuff. Are there any B&W versions where the kids can colour them in themselves? I’ve already printed out some B&W halloween related colouring pages but nothing as super as these masks. Thanks Gaz.

  5. Margit

    Amazing!!!
These are great! Thank you gaz!

I also like the idea of having kids color their masks.

    Anyway a super idea!

Just to play devil’s advocate for a moment. . . Wouldn’t it be better to pay the extra few pennies for the colour copies then use the much more expensive class time for more speaking practice?

  7. gumby

Richard, I agree that class time is better spent not coloring. However students do love to color and many will gladly do so at home. A black and white version is a good alternative for those who have larger classes or low budgets.

  8. Liza

    Duly acknowledged!

Colour dictations go down quite well in the classes I teach e.g. the kids saying I can see a green nose, purple hair, 5 orange ears etc or whatever game we decide to create out of the situation. Following instructions is listening practice and Halloween comes but once a year! I don’t have access to a colour photo copier. I’d have to print out the masks on my printer and would not be financially recompensed by the school authorities. As I teach over 300 kids at school, not including private classes, I’d like to incorporate language practice into the lessons using B&W masks. Then at least the kids do have the chance to have the masks, which are delightful. I’d like to be able to give them to all my 300 my students, but unfortunately at the moment, cannot.

I would probably award the coloured masks above to my private students as “presents” for correctly answered quiz questions for Halloween.

I recently printed out all my GE workbooks for the next ten weeks. Most of the pages are in black and white. I did however print all the Halloween pages and Christmas ones out in colour. The reactions from all 5 classes getting these coloured sheets has been great. I agree that colouring in can be fun and valuable, but with 3 – 6 year olds it does take so much time! I would rather they point or move a lego piece onto the right item.

My printer has cartridges for black, pink, yellow and blue. I order ink which I inject into them direct. I only paid about 25€ last year and I still have loads of ink left. I do print thousands of sheets each year and its such a cheap way to even produce all the coloured things! I too take my supplies into public school, they do not pay for them direct, they belong to me for ever!!

I will print these great masks in colour, laminate them and then I can use them in all my classes for as long as I like.

*****Well done to Gaz yet another great idea! You are a star*****

@Richard – Not sure if you saw my request for a couple more imagination Halloween worksheets over on the forum?!?! I would really appreciate some more. It would be great to have some for the Happy Halloween and Trick or Treat type vocab (eg ghost eyes, vampire teeth, some bones?) Please, Please if you get an opportunity!!

I also wouldn’t have them color these during class, but at home. I won’t use these at school but only for my private classes, so I’m fine with colored ones, but it’s true: kids love coloring, and it would give the masks an individual touch.
I also like liza’s idea of color dictations, for younger kids. I used to do this years ago, and I know it calms them down.

But I can imagine that it takes some time again to bring out everything in b+w. And I guess the volume of this page would really become pretty heavy.

Liza, one thing I used to do is just make copies of the pictures (go to a normal copy shop for simple cheapest copies.
It will be all different gray tunes and not sooo nice, but if the kids color in with crayons it will cover the gray and you will get simple nice pictures anyway.

Or actually- that would be a bit of work:
You could print them out once, and then you trace them. With these images it would be pretty easy and quick work, as the parts of the face are big. Once you have the traced versions you can copy them.

When I did this with BM before I got some of my older students to do this for me.
They are really happy to help, and even in school, some of them will be happy to spend their break time helping out instead of strolling around outside.

@imagination worksheets: I haven’t seen the forum today, but one of us is psychic, have a look at the imagination sheets page!

  12. Margit

    Great worksheets!

And Flossy, good feed back on the ink.
I checked my printer a couple of weeks ago, figuring out that there are no cartridges for ours.
My husband suggested to get a separate printer, as they are really cheap, but I refused, because the reason we bought this one is it’s compactness: phone, fax, printer, copy, lazer, all in one, really samll and nice (perfect for Japanese housing).
But reading your comment makes me think again.
you mean you paid 25 Euro for all colors together, printed hunderds of papers in color and still do have ink?

I’m paying about 5000 Yen for 4 colors and I would say I need about 4-6 sets a year.

Do you have a special “ink saving” printer?

  13. Liza

Thanks for the info. I too pay a small fortune in refills for my printer. If I understood Flossy correctly, I should be ale to refill my cartridges too. Thanks for the tips. I’ll look into them.

  14. Liza

Hi Flossy. Can you pm me the place where you order from? Presumably in Austria.

  15. Flossy

I made a short film. (I cannot upload images straight of the camera, so sorry it is photos and words, which is a bit long winded!!)

Margit – no ink saving, it is just so much cheaper to refill like this. I used to pay nearly 20 € per cartridge and then saw an advert on a shopping channel and thought why not give it a try. It works just the same and is such good value.

    Liza – will do!!

  16. Flossy

Richard – Thank you so much they are perfect. I will of course capture the results and share them too.

  17. gaz

Thanks for all the kind words!!
After i made these i was thinking that it would be great to tie them in with the songs.
Or maybe use them in a trick or treat game!!??
    Anyone got any ideas??

  18. Sevy28

Great ! they are genki !
    What a good idea.
    Thank you !

  19. Carol

Gaz they are really fantastic!!! Bravo! Thanks alot.

    Flossy, you are super…

  20. Dan Spark

Genki Gaz, great masks and they work really well because each character can now move and chase you in the classroom, Aaaahh!!! Wear the masks and the students say “Look there’s a witch!” except there’s a blindfold under the mask covering your eyes…react to the screams or I’m scared comments of the students and if you touch them they are the next masked monster or out of the game. Richard can I request a new song called “Genki Gaz”?
    Have a great weekend!

  21. Margit

    gaz,

I think these masks are great for many many games and activities.
Two ideas coming to my mind immediately:

    1. create a story with the kids:

The teacher puts on one mask and becomes that character:
The kids first ask “who are you”>>”I’m a …”
After that the kids are all kinds of question (this could be a group competition, etc)
How old are you? Where are you from? Where do you live? Do you have any brothers or sisters?
For sure they will come up with questions not included in the curriculum like: “Why is your nose green?” etc

This would end up in a story.
Next time another character appears, and hopefully I’ll be able to link these.

Thinking of next year already I would like to make a storybook and have them do a Halloween play next year.
(In Germany you have “Karneval” in February, so that would be something to use around that time as well.)

For kids who should approve reading, I’m thinking of writing out questions from the curriculum on mini cards and put them in an envelope. They take out one each and ask me that question.

    2. Active “Leapfrog game”:

Besides of two kids each child puts on a different mask and they line up.
The two kids without mask start from opposite ends to tell the kids :
    1st”witch sit down!>>2nd>>wizard sit down>>3rd ghost sit down>>
and from the other side>>monster sit down etc.

when they meet they do RPS the looser has to run back and start all over again this time “Witch stand up!…”and so on

for advanced kids it should be okay to leave the commands up to the “runners”, but in the beginning I’ll start with just “sit down and stand up”

I think I’m not so good in explaining games, do you understand this?

Another thing I thought is that with the masks on it would be easier for us to take videos and put on You tube, not to worry that parents complain.
So Richard, I’m looking forward to you technical video on Monday.

  22. sakura

I plan to use the B&W masks for the students to color and use in the school’s Halloween Mask Parade. I have 500+ students.

Thanks Gaz for these wonderful masks

  23. nena

Wow! I didn’t have time to turn on my computer for a couple of days and a found all this great stuff!
The masks are amazing…I agree color dictation is an important aspect specially when working with smaller children…I loved idea of making a story the games..etc You’re all so GENKIE…it’s hard to keep up.

The kids really enjoyed wearing the masks and posing for the camera today. Thanks! Genki English and its members are great! Thanks Gaz.

  25. Patrick

I love these masks! Thank you for all your hard work! BTW, I can’t figure out the character in the green hat. Is it a Leprechaun?
