Over the years I’ve heard many excuses from schools as to why they believe students shouldn’t learn English, from the outright racist “We don’t want them speaking with foreigners” to the uneducated “They have to learn their own language first.”
The best reason, and probably one of the few valid ones, came from a head teacher who told me
“No, I don’t want the kids learning English in grade 1. At that age I want them out of the class and into the forest playing in nature”
To which I say “Fair enough!”
I just listened to a great book on this on Blinkist called “How to raise a Wild Child” with lots of great ideas and attitudes. Definitely worth a listen.
