This is a quick (10 minutes) game for practicing
listening to the days of the week.
1. Split the kids into groups of 4 or 5 people.
2. You need space for this game, so either do it at the back of the classroom,
or even in the gym.
3. You then say a day of the week (Monday or Tuesday or
whatever)
4. Using their bodies the kids have to arrange themselves
into the Japanese Character (kanji) for
that particular day of the week.
5. The quickest team gets one point.
6. Repeat from step 3.
Here are Kanji for Saturday....
.......Sunday.......... ... and Wednesday!
When teaching the days of the week I like to do it using
the planets' names for Years 5 or 6. This way they learn
"Sun" for Sunday, "Moon" for
"Monday" and "Saturn" (they already
know this because of the Sega Saturn games console!) for
"Saturday" (they are similarly linked in
Japanese)
If you teach spelling to the kids (I don't as I think
speaking and listening are much more important) then try
getting them to spell out the first letter of a word, or
even spell a whole word as a class (hitomoji in
Japanese).
Here's the game in video from Jason Sensei. As you can see it's one of
those games that doesn't really contain that much English, but it does
cover a lot of basic skills.@
