target_English: Numbers, Junior High Warm Up
Ifve found that drinking games can often be adapted really well for a short
junior high warm up game. This game is no different.
Stand the class around in a circle, and explain to the students that they have to count from 1 upwards in a circular fashion.
You also need to explain to the students that they are not allowed to say any multiple of 7 (e.g. 7, 14, 21 etc), or any number with 7 in it (e.g. 7, 17, 27 etc). Instead, they must say gbuzz.h
When a student says gbuzz,h the direction of whose turn it is next reverses (i.e. from clockwise to anticlockwise or vice-versa).
I usually play the game by specifying a target number, depending on the number of times the students have played the game (if you can get up to the 70fs it gets interesting). The game also resets to 1 if a student forgets to say "buzz," hesitates for too long, or has forgotten that the direction has changed etc.
I found this to be a good motivational game, because all the students are working together to achieve a common goal, whilst students who may be less strong at English, but good at arithmetic can still do well. Also, my JTE and I will often join in, for great comical effect when we slip up ourselves.
