Create 4 (or more) foot patterns, eg. Left clap, right clap, forward clap,
back clap. I made a big poster for each to help explain. The others
involved a nod , a stamp and a slide. You can use anything you like. Go
through each pattern a few times. The key is to get them shouting the direction
as the move. So left as they move left and so on...
Practice a few times. Then get them into group and ask them to choose two
foot patterns. Give them 5-10 minutes to practice.
Tell them that it's a dance competition and the winners will get certificates,
(Crayola.com has a great certificate maker).
I use Rockafella Skank by Fatboy Slim. My lot love this track but anything funky will do. Get each group to perform their 2 foot patterns in front of the class. The JT and you can judge or you could get the students to judge each other. The one's with the highest score out of 10 is the winner.
My students really took to this activity, it took the whole 45 mins
but they really seemed to enjoy it. They also added extra noises and their
own 'flare' to the foot patterns. In the end, they all did so well that
I gave stickers to the other teams as well as certificates to the winning
team.
Give it a go , you'll have a lots of
foot tappin' fun!
