Pimsleur Japanese Review
I really like the Pimsleur courses mainly because I used them very successfully to learn Spanish in a month or so. In a competiton with Michel Thomas then I'd probably say that Michel Thomas Japanese just gets the edge, but if you are serious about learning Japanese then a combination of the two would be an absolute killer, you'd be fantastic in no time! The Pimsleur method is a very solid system that really does work, based mainly on how you forget things and hence when you need to be reminded. You get taught new words, phrases and ways of saying things which you then have to re-arrange to come up with new sentences. It's mentally draining, so no more than an hour a day, but you really come a long way really quickly.
The only downside of the course is that they have taken their core curriculum and simply translated this into Japanese. This does mean that in the beginning some of the Japanese does sound a little unnatural, not what a real Japanese speaker would say in that circumstance, but as you work through more material that all balances out and you can make lots of natural sounding stuff.
They have a "Quick & Simple" starter pack and also a full on "Gold Course". They are well recommended if you want to learn Japanese.
