Etto...
Obviously 'etto' isn't English. Well, some people do hear it as 'eight'
which could be a problem in some circumstances e.g. 'Would you like some
sausages', 'Etto', 'Wow, you'd like 8!?'
Usually though it just sounds not very cool. But luckily it's one of the
easiest things to change. Just get your students to say 'hmmm' and look
up in the air. To the person who asked the question it just looks just
like you are really fluent in English and are simply thinking of the answer.
If you're clever about it you could actually use it as an answer for any
question that can't be answered with yes or no. For example, 'Which do
you prefer the DS or PSP?'. 'Hmmm' or 'What would you like for lunch?'.
'Hmmm'. 'How's my singing?' 'Hmmm'. You see, it's a fantastic little piece
of English, do you think you'll use in class?
Hmmm
