Sending Money from Japan

If you need to send money back home from Japan, there are a few choices available to you. The Japanese Post Office is one way, but it can be tricky to get there during work hours. The easiest way by far is the Lloyds Bank "GoLloyds" service. It's quick, not too expensive and is really simple to set up.

Here are a few details and a form to send off to Lloyds to get you started.

GoLloyds is a fast, convenient and inexpensive way to send funds overseas^*. Use it to electronically remit funds to pre-registered beneficiaries. Remitters simply use one of Japan's 28,000 ATMs to transfer the funds domestically. GoLloyds then completes the overseas remittance.

GoLloyds offers most major currencies at very competitive exchange rates. Funds received by 3:00 pm are remitted abroad the same day by telegraphic transfer.

The service fee is only 2,000yen.

To open a GoLloyds account foreign residents are required to provide photocopies of two of the following:

1) Alien Registration Card (both sides)
2) Japanese Drivers Licence
3) Passport (photo page)

When you have completed the remittance application, please take a moment to review the "account opening check list", found at the bottom of the sample application page. For your own information, please be sure to read the "Terms and Conditions Governing GoLloyds Overseas Remittance Accounts".

Please note that your GoLloyds welcome pack will be sent to you via registered post. If you are not home when the Post Office delivers this package they will leave a card and you will need to call them to arrange a delivery time.

*Please note that we are currently not able to send funds to the following countries:
