Instead of the razzmatazz of Christmas Day, I wanted to capture the Christmas
Eve, snuggled up at home waiting for Santa, atmosphere. The song is soft
and gentle, and when we filmed the video clip for it I was watching in
another room with the parents of the child actors and when the song finished
they all started to cry!
The song looks like it has a lot of language in it, but because it is slow,
and because everything is explained in the video, kids can usually get
it on the second or third run through. It's also very easy to put mimes
and gestures to, which is highly recommended.
Game
With the picture book you have the board with the family members drawn
on, and a separate sheet of stickers. As you listen to the CD you put the
correct present onto the correct person.
This is a little tricky to do if you have a large group of kids, so what
I recommend is to make large versions of the family members and the presents
and use magnets to fasten them to the classroom chalkboard. Then everyone
listens together as a class and puts the correct presents on the family
members.
On the CD we also explain the game rules in Japanese ( just in case!),
and run through several variations of the game.
Picture Book: "Christmas Time"
Eventhough this is my own book, I played the narration CD this Christmas
Eve. Put on the the "parentese" soft version, and with the music
you just melt. So maybe the genki version is better for classroom use!
As with the other Kids English theme, once the kids have learnt the song
they can easily understand the picture book, even in one 45 minute lesson.
On the CD there are three recordings of the narration, chose the one according to the kids mood from "Parentese" ( really slow and clear), "Normal" or "Genki".
This theme is available in the Genki English "Kids English" set!
