"It's my birthday" by Richard Graham It's my birthday! It's my birthday! Hip, hip, hooray! Hip, hip, hooray! Hip, hip, hooray! Red and yellow And green and blue. Pink and orange And black and white. I'd like a party. (A party?) With some friends. (With some friends?) And some balloons. (And some balloons. Well, what colours would you like?) (Repeat Chorus) I'd like a cake. (A cake?) With some candles. (OK, some candles?) And some hats. (Some hats? Well, What colours would you like?) (Repeat Chorus) I'd like to play some games. (Some games?) Yeah, like charades. (Charades.) And bingo. (Bingo? OK, let's play a game of bingo!) (Repeat Chorus) Happy birthday! |
One of things I tried to do with the Kids English themes was to introduce
things like colours and numbers as a natural part of other themes that
were more like stories, rather than a list of language to learn.
Here we have lots of things that kids do at birthday parties, and they
all happen to involve things of the same colour i.e. balloons, hats and
colour bingo. It's a great way to introduce the colours without actually
teaching them as such.
Game
Colour bingo. Very simple. Use the narrations on the CD, or say them yourself.
You have a proper bingo card with the picture book, but for larger groups
you'll obviously have to use a standard 4x4 or 5x5 grid and get the kids
to fill in the colours. You can also do an interview style game for older
kids, like the Genki English How old are you? bingo.
On the CD we also explain the game rules in Japanese ( just in case!),
and run through several variations of the game.
Picture Book: "The Best Birthday Ever"
In this book Baby Bear hurts his leg whilst preparing his party. He thinks
all is lost, but one by one his friends come to his aid and he ends up
with the best birthday ever. The music on the narrations works really well
in setting the mood, from exciting, to sad, back to a very happy ending.
There's also a rendition of "Happy Birthday" in the middle.
As with the other Kids English themes, once the kids have learnt the song
they can easily understand the picture book, even in one 45 minute lesson.
The ending is quite fun here, so it should get a nice laugh from the kids.
On the CD there are three recordings of the narration, chose the one according to the kids mood from "Parentese" ( really slow and clear), "Normal" or "Genki".
This theme is available in the Genki English "Kids English" set!
