level: Junior High (JH)
target_English: Body Parts
Goal: The goal of the lesson is to reinforce body parts vocabulary
and allow students to practice deductive reasoning in relation to other
more complex body parts. For example; while all JH students know "Shoulders"
it takes awhile to deduce the location of their "Shoulder Blades".
1.Create a list of body parts. For my JHS students I
usually have 44 body parts on the list. While some are basic, others are not and
usually require a bit of deductive reasoning on the part of the student. Eg.
"Eye" followed by "eyebrow".
2.Students are split into teams. Make sure
each team is either boys or girls ONLY. Do not mix up the
teams!
3.Students have to choose one model. The model must stand still the entire
time and cannot help the other students in the team. They usually Janken it out.
4.The team cuts out each body part word and using tape, has to stick the
word onto their model. The kids absolutely love it and think placing the
tape of their model's ears, eyes, mouth etc. is hysterical.
5.They have ten minutes to finish and get as many correct words as possible.
The team with the most correct words wins! They go nuts when they see all
the other models.
Note: Depending upon the maturity of the
class, some kids will stick words on some silly places. I usually ask them once
if they are in JH or elementary school and I find it puts a stop to it right
away. Truth be told, this only happened twice, the other 24 times went like a
charm.
