This is a great song for practicing numbers and some simple "Shopping English".
1. Teach the phrase "How much?"
and the answer "It's ..... pounds/dollars/yen"
etc.
2. Let the kids practice by playing the stopwatch game, or better still the bargaining game. As they haven't done the song yet, they won't be that good, but don't
oworry we'll do it again after the song and the kids will really see the
difference!
3. Do a skit where you try to ask the price
of something and the seller has more than
one item!
4. Introduce why you need the phrase
"How
much is that ........ "
5. Go through "How much is that
.....?"
with several items of vocab.
6. You are now ready to play the song!
The Song
1. Put half the kids into a circle.
Give
these kids one picture card (or real
item)
each. They are the "shopkeepers"
2. The other kids form another circle
around
the outside of the first. These kids
are
the "shoppers". Every "shopper"
must pair up with a "shopkeeper"
3. Start the music
4. The shoppers sing "How much?
How
much? How much is that" + the
item that
their shopkeeper is holding.
5. The shopkeepers reply by saying
"It's
10, 9 ,8 ,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,"
6. The shoppers say "I'll take
it!"
7. Now, the shoppers each move round
one place, in a clockwise direction. The
shopkeepers don't move!
8. Repeat from 4.
9. When you have finished, the shoppers
and
shopkeepers change places and play
the song
again!
This takes a littel time for the kids to be able to do it well. The 10,9,8,7,
etc. bit is a bit tricky. But what I found was that I could make a great
competition out of it! At lunchtime or any time out of class, if any kid
could say the "10,9,8, etc." bit complete with melody, in understandable English
in less than 2 seconds then they got a prize (a sticker!). I had loads
of kids trying to have a go!! Originally I said 5 seconds but that was
too easy!!
