March 2004
Hello, and welcome to March! (Well, it's nearly here!). This month there
is a brand new game and details of lots of new stuff on the site!
New Game: Island Hopping
Target Age: Elem 1 to Junior High
Target English: Any vocab
This is a great review game that can either be played on the floor with
big A4 cards, or across the desk with smaller ones.
The game can be played with any number of players, from 2 to 200 - if
you have enough cards!
1. Give each player a pile of picture cards. They can be different cards,
but the amount of cards should be the same for each person.
2. The teacher says "go!"
3. The kids pick up the top card of their pile of cards.
4. They shout out the word on the card. Or for a more challenging version
they make up a sentence that features that word.
5. They put the card on the floor and walk onto it.
6. Repeat from 3.
7. Each card has to touch the edge of the previous card.
8. First kid to reach the other side of the classroom wins!
For this version you need to prepare lots of A4 cards, you can print lots of them from this this, see the clip art page.
For the desktop version you print out smaller cards and they have to race
each other to the edge of the desk ( obviously without walking on the cards
this time!). The evaluation sheets on this site are great to cut up and use to make these smaller cards!
The illustrated version of this game (so you can get a better idea of what's going on!) and the Japanese translation maybe found here! http://genkienglish.net/islandhopping.htm
More cards for the Genki English card game
There are another set of 14 cards for the very popular Genki English card game this month. I will actually be making these into a pack to buy from the site in the future, so for now they are on the new "Members Area" ( http://genkienglish.net/members.htm ) of the site. This is a new area where people who have bought the Genki
English CDs can get even more value with lots of new free materials. There
are also lots of worksheets in this area. If you don't have the CDs yet,
check out what people think of them in the Songs Page http://genkienglish.net/songs.htm and if you do - enjoy the new stuff!
For JHS to Adult: "Kakkoii Eigo"
When I was learning German at school rather than asking for a loaf of bread
or booking a hotel room, I always wanted to be able to say cool, everyday
stuff like "I don't believe it", "You're joking"or
"I've no idea". So I've updated and renamed the "Kakkoii
Eigo" ( Cool English ) area of the site with lots of these cool phrases
and example dialogues you can hear spoken. The Japanese translations are
also present so should help motivation for your slightly older students,
or indeed co-workers!
And Finally,
The discussion board ( http://genkienglish.net/discussion.mv ) has had lots of great ideas on it this past week including lots of great games for practising days of the week. And Genki English viewer Brian Shepherd has also sent in his "Home Run Derby Game" to the Your Games section of the site ( http://genkienglish.net/gamesreaders.htm ). So overall a ton of new stuff for you to enjoy!
Oh, and if you have any feedback about the newsletter I'd love to hear
it! Is it good to include a game every month? Would more hints or tips
be better? How about more info about other sections of the website? All
feedback is much appreciated!
