“Kids these days have got short attention spans, they’re impossible to teach!”
This is something I hear a lot these days.
The thing is that I have been teaching since I was 16, so when I hear it, it just doesn’t ring true for me.
For example with my niece, when she is watching Peppa Pig, she has an infinite attention span. She can watch that program all day long!
And with teenagers as well, some of my most popular Tik Toks for learning English have got millions of views …
Now, it would be amazing to think that’s 4 million kids watching and learning from it, but it’s not.
It’s a few hundred thousand kids watching the videos hundreds of times over and over and over.
So this skill, How to get the students’ attention and keep it, is learnable.
TV companies spend a fortune learning it and I spent years lesson planning and materials testing it until we finally found out exactly what does keep the students attention all the way through the class.
To be honest I can’t remember the last time I had a class that felt too long.
It always feels too short.
It’s like we’re having so much fun and learning so much so we got no problems with attention.
So, learn the skill.
