Sugata Mitra has just done another TED talk that’s definiltey worth while seeing.
Whilst I don’t think he’s quite got the solutions yet (before Genki English the schools we were working on together in Hyderabad originally had kids watching Tom & Jerry rather than learning! 🙂 ), his description here of the school system is really worthwhile watching!
Plus he introduces the most powerful teaching phrase we can ever use…..

This was a great talk! I think everyone is born with a sense of wonder but sadly we lose it as we get older unless it is nurtured. I think building children’s sense of self-worth by showing their contributions are valuable is the best way to motivate them. There’s too much emphasis on competition rather than collaboration (ok if you’re getting high marks but those who aren’t often feel negative about education and who can blame them really?).
