New Game: Hot Seat

Here’s Mido’s game of the week for reviewing any theme, but why not ice cream! πŸ™‚

1. Put two chairs at the front of class.

2. Split the class into two groups.

3. One person from each group comes to the front and sits on a chair.

4. The teacher has a pile of flashcards, they show the top card to the rest of the class, but so the kids in the chairs can’t see.

5. Everyone has to keep quiet when the teacher shows the class the card!

6. Then everyone shouts out today’s question e.g. What’s your favourite flavour?

7. The teacher then spins around and shows the flashcard to the students in the chairs.

8. The first student to jump and and shout out the answer on the card correctly gets a point for their team!

9. Repeat from step 3.

The fun part is here is the keeping quiet in step 5, almost every time someone will shout out the word! πŸ™‚ Β So you just move to the next flashcard!

If you don’t have much control over your class have each kid answer 2 or 3 questions so not too much time is lost changing the kids who are sat down. Β  (And of course spend more time on the Warm Up next time so they do what you say really quickly! πŸ˜‰ )

What do you think? Β Do let us know in the comments!

Cool way to review both vocabulary and getting them to quickly answer in a complete sentence. When I do question lines, I’ve gotten away from hammering them to answer in a complete sentence because often the whole sentence slows down their answer (though the know what to answer – shortwise – like “What’s your favorite animal?” “DOG!”).

This game seems to be the same sort of thing, but maybe since the ANSWER is pre-determined on the flashcard, they must say the complete sentence and practice that.

This game is sort of similar to a game I play called, “1,2,3 Turn” where two kids stand back to back each holding a flashcard and they walk three paces and turn (like a gun fight) and must say the card that is facing them (the other kid holding) before the other person.

This is somewhat reminiscent of the line game, which I really loved (and so did my students). This is a bit of an improvement since it involves the entire class.

I think it’s important for kids to answer in full sentences, if anything, just to get in the habit.

I’ll be giving it a try soon.
