Yes, it’s out! ย No, not Pokemon, the Genki Phonics Homework app.
You don’t need to learn how to teach phonics anymore, just recommend the app to your students and go through the reading exercises in class.
It is going to save you sooooo much time, ย plus it is lots and lots of fun – with monsters!
We just released it today so I’d love any stars you could give it, ย and it’s on at a special half price introductory offer so all of you can get your students on there before it goes up in price.
Enjoy,
Be genki,
Richard
P.S. ย Unlike the regular Genki English app which will be $10 per student *per month* ย this one is just a one off fee of $9.99 ย (because many of you will be doing it 5 minutes per week rather than full 45 minute lessons.) ย So it’s really easy to add to your curriculum and hopefully we’ll get so many of you on here that I can get lots of funky new updates for you! ย Check out now!
P.P.S. ย There’s also a Japanese explanation video here.ย Very excited, this has been so much work to bring to you, ย and hopefully it’s going to lead into the Xprize.
Great news! Are you going to lanuch it on Android soon?
Wow! It looks great. Cool way to do the reading part: listen to the monsters say the sound or word and drag the written word to the right one. It really is the Phonics lesson all in an app! I’m going to recommend this immediately to all my students and the school (though the school will be not be receptive to my suggestions).
Thanks Martin!
If we get enough people using the iOS ones I’ll start having a look at android!
You gotta make it for Android! More and more people are going Android and this app is AWESOME.
No that’s the way to persuade me! ๐
Nice work. The app can be a good supplement to the workbooks. I may even use it in class sometimes. Teach the kids a routine with the app and workbook and then let them go. I guess the first update will be to add a video of you pronouncing the sounds? A menu. The stories?
Thanks Trevor! Keep me up to date on how it goes. I don’t plan on adding any video (too big and the kids don’t really need it – think how blind kids still get fluent pronunciation!) but the stories definitely, they are the holy grail to figure out how to do! (Maybe with the current monsters game, but with sentences???)
Or even with the stories you could have the sentence and have the kids match up to the correct illustration (though this would require a lot of time in Illustrator coming up with all the pictures and incorrect pictures).
Tried it with my son, 4 years old. He could use the app. he got most of it right, made a couple of mistakes which means it was about right for him.
Yes, the stories are a very important element.
Kids, especially kids who may be doing this without a teacher need input and they need speaking practice.
Some ideas for the stories: (maybe a ridiculous amount of work).
1. Read slowly so kids can listen and repeat.
2. Story chanted so kids can chant along
3. Story read at normal speed by a monster (could be option to chose which monster you want to read the story to you with the monsters having different voices, male/female, different accents etc..)
4. Some kind of game element to check reading and comprehension
As Martin suggested a comprehension check by matching illustrations or Just have the monsters say different sentences and then they drag the sentence to the monster who read correctly or a comprehension question and click on the monster who answers correctly.
i’m sure you will find some brilliant way of doing it.
Great ideas! I shared the app with one of my classes. A number of the parents were very bummed that it is only for Apple right now! Hope you can develop it for Android, too. The parents are rioting!
