The Top 22 English Teaching Problems I Tried to Solve with the Teacher’s Set!

With the Genki English Teacher’s Set going up in price today I thought I’d revisit the top 20 teaching problems that I tried to solve when creating & evolving the set over the last 20+ years!

Did I miss any?

The top 22(!) teaching problems I tried to solve with the Genki English Teachers Set!

  1. Kids (or maybe teachers too?) aren’t confident!  Solved:  I added in confidence training right from the very first lesson, step by step we build your self esteem through every lesson.
  2. Kids forget everything!   Solved: I used the techniques from TV and advertising to make the Genki English songs to review the whole lesson in one or two minutes.
  3. Kids fall asleep! Solved:  The Genki music I designed to bring the kids (and maybe the teacher too) back alive with a (fully controllable!) boost of energy.
  4. Kids are too out of control!  Solved:  I added a discipline toolkit with all my top discipline to the tricks for even the toughest classes.
  5. Kids get bored! Solved:  The graphics, content & games are silly and attention grabbing, keeping them fully attentive whilst still learning.
  6. Kids (or maybe teachers too) can’t pronounce all the words.  Solved:  Each picture has a sound, just touch it and you hear the sound in lots of different accents and intonations.
  7. Kids (and teachers?) get confused with grammar rules.   Solved:  We got rid of the need to teach grammar rules by using lots and lots of comprehensible input (in each song they hear the grammar structure dozens of times) the kids intuitively pick up how the grammar works.
  8. Kids dont have enough time to speak in class!  Solved: For every lesson the output stage consists of an English game where every kid in the class is talking in groups or pairs, so every child gets the chance to speak in every lesson.
  9. Kids get confused with reading and writing!  Solved: I added a reading course (Genki Phonics) and writing course (Genki Storywriting) to go with the speaking program.
  10. Kids get confused with phonics programs designed for native speakers!  Solved: I redesigned the UK government’s phonics guidelines to be for non- native speakers in 5 minute chunks that you can teach with just one piece of paper!
  11. Parents are too demanding!  Solved:  Whilst I always recommend only letting in the parents with the right attitude (getting into your class is a privilege, not a right!), I also designed the curriculum to get the best results in the fastest possible time.  Believe me they are going to be more than satisfied when they see the results!
  12. Parents want exams!  Solved:  See above & we cut out the fluff and really made sure the curriculum is focused on what the kids need as well as what they want!
  13. Teacher has no time! Solved:  I give you all my lessons plans & stripped them down to three simple steps to remove the need for lesson planning time. (Or wasting time searching on the internet!)
  14. Teacher has no money!  Solved: I added a “how to earn a more money” course based on the ideas from the most successful teachers.
  15. Teacher isn’t sure how to teach it! Solved: I added videos from around the world of the different parts of the lessons,  you get to see it and copy what the best teachers do.
  16. Teacher needs Intermediate & Advanced levels too!:  Solved:  I added in two of my Intermediate courses and training on how I teach my Genki Advanced program.  So now you have the tools to teach any students that come your way!
  17. Teacher isn’t sure what to teach next!  Solved:  We asked the kids what language they want to learn, added in all the sounds of English plus all the most common grammar structures and made them into the Genki English curriculum.
  18. Teacher isn’t sure if they are teaching the right things!  Solved:  Imposter syndrome is real – I had it too – so I worked with universities all over the world, including Newcastle University in the UK, Harvard Graduate School of Education in the US and other European universities to study what we were doing and make sure it was working for the kids and the aims of the schools!  (Mostly it was, where it wasn’t we changed it!)
  19. Teacher can’t find enough new students!  Solved: Whilst word of mouth is always the best way, social media can also really help too so I added a “how to get students on social media” showing the exact plans I used to get millions of views on Youtube, Tik Tok & Facebook
  20. Teacher feels too alone!  Solved:  Community is at the heart of everything we do and you get zoom chats, email support from myself and the fabulous online group to share and help each other.  You are one of us now!
  21. Teacher needs help teaching online! Solved: During the pandemic we added a whole “how to teach online” course with the best online teachers sharing their top ideas.
  22. Teacher wants to know they are doing well in world.  Solved:  Just check out the smiles after every Genki English lesson or even better, your students coming back in future years thanking you for everything you did for them!
