Why do I do this? This is why!

I’m in Valencia, Spain this week.

Lots of people have been writing in over the summer asking why I’m still working on Genki English every day, even after 20 years and even when everyone else is in their summer holidays.

The reason is quite simple,  we all do things because we have a passion to change something.

And for me that is to change how school is taught.

When I was at school I just found most of the lessons soooooo boring.

Outside was high tech! Star Wars! Action! Stories! Excitement!  Then in class it was very often ……  zzzzz  …..

So I vowed to change it!  I figured if I wanted to learn and enjoy learning at the same time then other people would too,  so at 16 years old I put up a card in the supermarket.

And things sort of went on from there …..

Enjoy yourself, find your passion and let’s make that change!

Be genki,

Richard

I love your passion! It truly shows in all the materials you have developed. Everyone is involved and smiling. I also like that your lessons don’t have the students tied to a computer… they are up and moving… no more numb brains! Thank you, Richard!

I understand completely. I´ve just given myself two weeks holiday and I seem to be spending most of my time preparing for September. I see you are in Valencia. I don´t suppose you´ve ever thought of popping over to Mallorca. Let me know if you do!

When you were in school why did you find lessons so boring?

@Smith: Now that is a good question!

“When you were in school why did you find lessons so boring?”

I guess the main thing for me was just the modality. Outside school it was movies and sounds and animations and action and music. Then in class it was just …… dead pieces of trees. Plus it was mostly chalk and talk with hardly any interaction and such monotony ….. Plus the lack of stories, intrigue, or excitement in most of the classes!

So basically everything I set out to change 180 degrees with Genki English and my previous teaching before that!

Richard, you are my idol. My life has changed since I started using Genki English to teach English. I started working with groups. Children love these lessons. The learning outcome is excellent. Frankly, I envy your persistence!
