(The song is also on Tik Tok, Instagram, Facebook aswell as the longer Youtube mix!)
When trying to deal with strong emotions, then giving each emotion a name can really help.
It’s like in the movies, the monster you can’t see is scary, but once you give it a name it lessens its power to control you.
So for younger kids with have the Genki English How are you? Lesson right near the beginning of the curriculum. This has been used by thousands of students around the world and even TV and Hollywood celebrities!
And for more advanced teen or adult students we have the new Advanced Emotions song!
The song you can find on Youtube at the top of the page.

As always with emotions, do tread carefully if you aren’t trained or experienced yet.
Usually with Genki English we want strong communication and students all speaking with each other.
But for this theme, as it is more of a Growth Mindset tool then individual reflection and exercises may work better. For example if you picked the “Angry” card you think of a situation that caused this emotion, say “I broke my screen!” It can also help for students to think in terms of the characters, rather than themselves. e.g. “Someone broke her screen!” (Just watch out if you’re teaching teenage boys and some of the things they will come out with!)
Of course for some students this will all be too much, so leave this for the councillors!
But in general this a very powerful tool and very important part of the Genki English mindset that is so crucial to getting fluent and, of course, being happy.
And always remember the most important rule about emotions, the Stoic philosophy of
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.”
Be Genki,
Richard
