Could you send a message to Japan for me?

In addition to the 5,000 readers of this blog there are nearly 4,000 teachers on my monthly newsletter that I write in Japanese.

After the sad news from New Zealand last month I promised them all that this month I would be back to being “Genki” 元気 the Japanese word meaning for “fun”, “energetic” & “full of life”

Needless to say that won’t be happening.

Touched

But I have been very, very touched by all the messages that you have all sent me.  There isn’t much I can do here.  But I do really want to pass that feeling on to everyone else in Japan.

Originally we were thinking it would be great for your kids to make posters, take digital pictures and send them in.  And of course if you could do that it would be amazing, please just email them to me.

But looking at sites like such as http://hopeletters.wordpress.com/ where you can write longer messages to everyone in Japan (and I would urge you to do so),   I was thinking that, you know, it’s not just the kids. The teachers themselves are also really needing to hear your messages.

After a week of stress, getting a message from overseas, or even elsewhere in Japan, can really lift your day.

Guilty?

Do I feel guilty about asking this for Japan?  Well, yes.  Especially seeing as I have had so many emails from teachers in Chile expressing support after their horrible quake last year.   And I never did anything then.  Sadly, Japan will probably recover more quickly as well.

But I’m kind of justifying it because I’ve actually been to a lot of those schools that you are seeing on TV.  I’ve done big shows for their kids and done workshops for the teachers.  I used to be up on those stages that are now refugee camps.

You’re family

Just like you, all the teachers who read the Japanese newsletter teach Genki English and we really are one big family.

I’d really like to ask you to take the time to just write maybe one or two lines (put them in the comments below) to express your support then I will collate them up and send them in the newsletter this week.  If you could leave your name (first name only is also fine) and where you are from it would be great.  I really don’t want to be sending out a fun game this month.

Most of the teachers can’t really speak English (otherwise they’d subscribe to the English newsletter not the Japanese one!)  but they are all trying really hard.  So keep the English really, really simple.  Also remember that we don’t have the mass media hysteria over here so keep the words positive and supportive.  Be creative and original.

Even for the teachers not in the affected areas, just hearing your messages will spur them on.   I’m sure they will use them in class for older students, but I mainly want them to be from you, teacher to teacher, to show your support.

Ganbare!

Finally I want to teach you one more word of Japanese.  You already know Genki – 元気  and now I want to teach you Ganbaré! がんばれ!  Ganbare means “keep going”,  “never give up”, “keep trying” or “keep your spirits high”.

If you can find the time to write a short message of support here I would very much appreciate it.

Ganbare!

Richard

    Dear Japanese People,

I am deeply sad about what happened in your beautiful country. I am a Turkish teacher of English. We suffered from a similar earthquake disaster in 1999 in the region of Marmara and many people lost their lives. What attracts my attention is that you are so honourable people that I haven’t seen anybody around shouting or screaming.I am simply proud of you on behalf of humankind. I believe that you will also be able to tackle those difficulties. All the best to you all.

Despite past differences and disputes, most people here in South Korea feel very badly for Japan; I hope and pray to God that the heroes who are fighting to control the nuclear plants will have the strength, courage and skill needed to manage the situation and bring it under control.

    일 본 만 세!(Long live Japan!)

  14. Nikki

My thoughts are of course with all of Japan, but I would like to draw your attention to various groups on sites such as Facebook where people are offering rooms in the houses to help Japanese people who can get out of the country all over the world. If they have to evacuate Tokyo, these people will need somewhere to go so please have a look for these groups to show your support and spread the word so that people are aware if it comes to this.

I lived in Tokyo for three years and it is very sad to see this and I am now sending my best wishes to all of you.

  15. Nikki

PS, I send my best wishes from mexico city!!

I’d like to pass on this old irish blessing. Maybe it will help you in these tough times:

“When the road you walk is dark
    May you always hear
Even in your hour of sorrow
The gentle singing of the lark
When times are hard may hardness
Never turn your heart to stone
    May you always remember
    when the shadows fall
That you do not walk alone”

    You are in our thoughts.

Praying so hard. This helped me when I needed hope so I hope it helps someone else.
If you can look at the sunset and smile,
    then you still have hope.

If you can find beauty in the colors of a small
flower, then you still have hope.

If you can find pleasure in the movement of
a butterfly, then you still have hope.

If the smile of a child can still warm your heart,
    then you still have hope.

If you can see the good in other people,
    then you still have hope.

If the rain breaking on a roof top can still lull
you to sleep, then you still have hope.

If the sight of a rainbow still makes you stop
and stare in wonder, then you still have hope.

If the soft fur of a favored pet still feels pleasant
under your fingertips, then you still have hope.

If you meet new people with a trace of excitement
and optimism, then you still have hope.

If you give people the benefit of a doubt,
    then you still have hope.

If you still offer your hand in friendship to others
that have touched your life, then you still have hope.

If receiving an unexpected card or letter still brings
a pleasant surprise, then you still have hope.

If the suffering of others still fills you with pain and frustration, then you still have hope.

If you refuse to let a friendship die, or accept that
it must end, then you still have hope.

If you look forward to a time or place of quiet and
reflection, then you still have hope.

If you still buy the ornaments, put up the Christmas
tree or cook the turkey, then you still have hope.

If you still watch love stories or want the endings
to be happy, then you still have hope.

If you can look to the past and smile,
    then you still have hope.

If, when faced with the bad, when told everything
is futile, you can still look up and end the conversation
with the phrase….”yeah….BUT..” then you still have hope.

Hope is such a marvelous thing. It bends, it twists, it sometimes hides, but rarely does it break. It sustains us when nothing else can. It gives us reason to continue and courage to move ahead, when we tell ourselves we’d rather give in.

Hope puts a smile on our face when the heart cannot
    manage.

Hope puts our feet on the path when our eyes cannot
    see it.

Hope moves us to act when our souls are confused
    of the direction.

Hope is a wonderful thing, something to be cherished
and nurtured, and something that will refresh us in return.
And it can be found in each of us, and it can bring light
into the darkest of places. Never lose hope

Dear people in Japan, We were watching television. We were watching the news. A Cola in one hand, some chips in the other hand. A robbery in Amsterdam, a murder in Berlin, an earthquake in Japan. News, news, news…..The impact of the earthquake? We only see the images. We don’t feel it. We were not there. But then you see and hear more….and more…and more…and you talk about it with your husband and your kids. You try to imagine what the people in Japan must feel. My God, how would I feel all of the sudden without my house, my home, my family, my friends, my safety?? And more and more I realized the impact of all this. I can’t solve this. I am not God. But we will surely do whatever we can. We will surely give money, food or whatever the help organizations will ask for. We are all human beings and we MUST help each other!! Whether you’re white, black, red, yellow, green, blue, purple, thick, thin, tall, short, jewish, moslim, catholic, woman, man, child or whatever!
Yesterday we had an earthquake here in Quebec. “Only” 4,5 !! But I was scared!
Something else….we saw on television that the people of Japan didn’t even rob the stores to get food….(like they did in some other countries)I HAVE DEEP RESPECT FOR THE ATTITUDE OF THE JAPANESE PEOPLE!! We will help! TOGETHER WE ARE STRONG!!! WE WON’T FORGET YOU!!!

    greetings from Liesbeth – Canada

Many thanks to all the people who have written such heartfelt messages in this thread, as well as on the Hope Letters website that Richard kindly linked in his post. (Thank you Richard as well!)

According to David Chan, the website’s creator, the site is receiving over 100 letters and 1,200 visitors a day.

Once again, here’s the link: http://hopeletters.wordpress.com/

It’s a very practical way to help, as your messages will be translated into Japanese by a native speaker and delivered to the people who desperately need hope and encouragement during this terrible tragedy.

Many thanks as well to Gumby, who distributed messages to an evacuation centre in her town. Efforts like hers are helping Hope Letters fulfill its objective. If anyone else on this thread can help with distribution or translation, please do not hesitate to let David know at HopeLettersCanada@gmail.com.

An Italian poet wrote: “I don’t know where the seagulls have their nest,
where they can find some peace.
    I’m like them,
    endlessly flying.
    I graze my life
just as they graze the water grabbing their food.
And maybe like them I love quietness,
the great quietness of the sea,
but my destiny is to live
    lightening in the storm.”

I bow before you and I hope you can soon find the quietness of the sea.Monica
