Due to popular request, Val has been busy at work making videos of Genki English songs with ASL signs! ( Here’s her original article about why ASL works so well: “The Amazing Discovery”).

If you’re wanting to figure out what the signs for various words are, I’m finding the iphone to be invaluable.

Grab the Baby Sign app (or the free Baby Sign Lite app), hit a word on the dictionary and you see a video of it being signed. Very useful!!

Or you can learn from Val in the videos below!

    Val,
I showed the vegetable video to a friend yesterday, and right away our kids (5 all together) cam running by “what is this?”
They were thrilled and after watching the video only once they sang and signed the song even hours later while eating in a restaurant.

I didn’t try this song so far, because I felt it too much for me to remember and DO, but after this reaction I have to use it. It was really fun!
    Thank you again.

I have started using Actlan (Teaching Japanese with sign language) in my Japanese classes from year 7 to year 11. The students love it and are learning twice as fast. In 2 lessons my year 7 students have been able to say 10 verbs, use them in a sentence with a subject and object and use present, past, want, don’t and let’s forms. Signing is the way. Interestingly the boys, who normally aren’t that excited about languages, really love this style of learning. It is great!

Simone, please tell us more. Does the method have its own set of signs? Do you use a certain textbook. I saw a brief intro and was intrigued but have yet to find anything in more detail.
