6. And Finally....
Happy New Year! I hope you had a great Christmas. Now it's back to work
in what promises to be a very exciting Year of the Dog. There are plenty
of new things on Genki English to keep your lessons fresh and alive in
2006. Let's see what we have ...
1. Make a Face Song, Cards & Games
Another new song, this time in the "easy to teach" mould. Very
simple, but very catchy for teaching parts of the face. This song works
great at this time of year to fit in with the Japanese New Year game of
"fukuwarai" or "make a face".
In fukuwarai all you do is draw a large blank face on the chalkboard. One
kid is blindfolded and the others have to guide them as they place cut
out face parts onto the board.
The picture cards for this theme were done by my cousin James, and feature
our new characters called "Nose", "Ears", "Mouth",
"Eye", "Eyebrows", "Cheeks", "Hair"
and "Tongue". They should hopefully provide a new twist to teaching
parts of the face!

The picture cards for this theme are now included with the laminated picture
card pack at no extra charge.

One other really simple game for this theme is to get the kids to touch
a part of their face. Then another, then another, then another, it gets
fun when they run out of fingers! Putting the kids in groups and getting
them to come up with their own combinations is also good fun.
2. Printable Picture Book: "Favourite Food"
Picture books can be a great way to give kids lots of fun English listening
experience. If there's a nice twist in the tale the kids will want to read
it again and again. Of course the trick is finding ones that have simple
enough language.
So here is the first in a new online series of picture books. It features
the phrase "What's your favourite....?" plus animals and food
names. Anyone can read the virtual version online ( and turn the virtual
pages), and if you are a
CD Owner, you can
download a pdf version to print out and use in class. There's also a printable version
with U.S. "favorite" spelling.

Let me know what you think and I might be able to put up some more on the
site.
3. Games of the Month
There are lots of great new games on the site this month, including:

There's also a selection of simple ice breaker games if you ever have any
adult classes to teach:

4. Printable 2006 Calendars
As a very Special New Year's thank you to all the
Genki English CD Owners Club members, here's a 12 month, printable 2006 calendar! They're great for decorating
the classroom.

5. Picture Cards Printing too narrow?
Going round a few schools last year I noticed a few of them had printed
out the Genki English picture cards, but they had come out elongated and
looking a little funny to say the least.
The trick is to use the print box that pops up when you first load the
picture card. If you cancel this box and use the file menu to print, it'll
turn out funny. But if you press "OK" on the print box that pops
up with the picture card, you'll have the pictures perfectly formed for
A4 and looking very nice.
6 And Finally
A few people found the CD1 upgrade offer to be a little tricky to do last
month, so to help you out, instead of sending in cash, you can now order
online. Please use the Student Packs Order form, and if you already have
a copy of CD1 you'll be OK to set the CD1 quantity to 1 and still get it
for 1,980 yen including post and packing. I hope that makes a little easier
for you. We'll keep the offer open till the end of January.

There are also an improved set of time flashcards, have a look:

Otherwise there are lots more new things coming up on the site. And I'm
off to do my first workshop in Germany tomorrow. Thanks to everyone in
Thailand last month ( I even got to have lunch with the Prime Minister!),
enjoy the new song and games and have a very, very Genki 2006!
