Wow!!!Gaz, Richard, this is fabulous! What a big surprise before Christmas again. Thank you so much.
I’m really having great lessons with my 5th graders with this topic.

    It’s also easy to link:
    1. “let’s make a gingerbread house
    2. “gingerbread man” story
    3. retell the story and in the spot where the boy asks grandma to make a gingerbread man add the simple instruction: “let’s make a gingerbread man: first we need some…”

    4. make gingerbread man and/or house

    And: This crocodile is SUPER!
    Thank you!

    That’s is fantastic!
Now, how to fit this in before the end of term….

I’ve never really used this kind of material in a class before and I’m not sure how to introduce it. I guess ending with a performance is good, but how do you get them to that stage? Also, in a bigger class, do you have several groups of 4 performing one after the other? I’m not sure I’d have time for that.

Does anyone have a step by step lesson plan to share?

The only tricky bit of this is the chorus. So I’d teach that first and get everyone to be able to sing it. (Actually Gaz, any chance of a picture of the Gingerbread man actually running?)

Draw a big forest or something on the board. Put up the Gingerbread Man picture card. Then put up the Grandma card. Ask the kids if they can come up with some questions they could ask each other. Then say “Well, Grandma is hungry …. etc.” Then sing the chorus and make them run!

Do the same thing with the tiger and croc.

Then you can run through the whole thing again with the music.

For the next lesson do the show, I’d just have one kid for each part with everyone singing the chorus. (I’ll try and make a chopped up version of the mp3 with just the chorus!) If parents were there you could also have a touch of Japanese so they could follow the story!

I used to do a similar thing with the 3 little pigs.

That’s kinda fun! The run, run as fast as you can is from the gingerbread man story?

In the third and fourth grade Korean English class there are roleplays at the end of every unit..you can see them by going to http://www.gamedu.kr

Kids really enjoy doing the roleplays, dressing up and doing some drama. I don’t think they take acting classes in school here (Korea).

  5. Nathalie

Great animation. Will be a hit in my classes!

  6. Liza

WOWZA! Thanks very much. One of my private groups will be performing this for their parents next week. I hope to film it.

  7. richard

Hi Roy, yeah I put a melody to the chorus and simplified the verse so any kids can enjoy it!

  8. Nena

    Absolutely FANTASTIC!
as soon as you put it up … used it with a seven year old girl who does private lessons alone…(she pretty good in English…) We read the book and then played the song…then we talked about the differences…It was a great lesson!
I’ll try it with my 3rd graders on Friday!
Thanks for all the hard work Richard… and Gaz l love the art work…my favorite the crocodile!

  9. julian

    Thanks for the tips, Richard.
I’m going to use it next week with some private students. I think I have a copy of the book somewhere, so I might do like Nena did.

And, yes, the croc is great!

  10. Sonja

This crocodile is a hit! Love it! Thank you!!!!

I love the gingerbread man too. I’ll use it to introduce the vocab before reading the book.

  11. Evi

Absolutely wonderful !!! I used it with my pre-junior class and they loved it! Actually they love all Genki songs- Richard, you made our every day lessons Genki!!
I was thinking of filming it too so you can see how much we enjoy it!
Also I was thinking how proud you should be that your ideas are spreading all over the world!!(we are in Cyprus by the way) Well done – and keep up the hard work we will support you all the way!

My daughter watched it 7 times in a row!
I find this video really great as it is so rewarding for the kids to be able to understand what the characters say.
    This is brillant!

    Dear Richard!
I just got the link for shapes in MP4. Thanks. It works GREAT!
Is there a way to get an animation for this song too?
I keep singing the song all day myself!
