If you don’t have time to do a full lesson plan on phonics each week then here’s a quick “5 minute phonics” session that you can do at the end of a normal Genki English lesson.

1. Ask the kids what the words are (they must have previously studied these)
2. Ask them to think what today’s sound might be. (Don’t tell them, ask them to think and give them time)
3. Show them how to write today’s sound.
4. Practice reading together.
Obviously it’s not going to get the same results as the full phonics lesson (the video is part way down this page) but if you are really short on time it’s possible to add it in this way. You can probably start it after you have completed around half of the GE themes. Or less if you plan it really well!
The posters you can find on the main Phonics Page and of course the most important point is that the kids must be able to say a lot of the words before you start. There’s no point being able to read or write if you can’t speak – as Japan’s economy just found out this week!

Actually I teach phonics with this time limit (may be 5-10 minutes, each week, but not more). My thoughts on this:
I think even with the limited time the most important thing of the GE phonics for the kids is the gestures. So I’m missing these here.
Even if you won’t have the time to go through all the words on the bottom of the page I think you should make sure to add the time for the gestures.
This way the phonics lesson becomes fun and interesting, and something they wait for. At the end of a 60 minute lesson kids are usually tired but with the gesture phonics lesson it’s possible to end on a high note.
