I’m really having great lessons with my 5th graders with this topic.
It’s also easy to link:
1. “let’s make a gingerbread house”
2. “gingerbread man” story
3. retell the story and in the spot where the boy asks grandma to make a gingerbread man add the simple instruction: “let’s make a gingerbread man: first we need some…”
4. make gingerbread man and/or house

Now, how to fit this in before the end of term….
I’ve never really used this kind of material in a class before and I’m not sure how to introduce it. I guess ending with a performance is good, but how do you get them to that stage? Also, in a bigger class, do you have several groups of 4 performing one after the other? I’m not sure I’d have time for that.
Does anyone have a step by step lesson plan to share?
The only tricky bit of this is the chorus. So I’d teach that first and get everyone to be able to sing it. (Actually Gaz, any chance of a picture of the Gingerbread man actually running?)
Draw a big forest or something on the board. Put up the Gingerbread Man picture card. Then put up the Grandma card. Ask the kids if they can come up with some questions they could ask each other. Then say “Well, Grandma is hungry …. etc.” Then sing the chorus and make them run!
Do the same thing with the tiger and croc.
Then you can run through the whole thing again with the music.
For the next lesson do the show, I’d just have one kid for each part with everyone singing the chorus. (I’ll try and make a chopped up version of the mp3 with just the chorus!) If parents were there you could also have a touch of Japanese so they could follow the story!
I used to do a similar thing with the 3 little pigs.

In the third and fourth grade Korean English class there are roleplays at the end of every unit..you can see them by going to http://www.gamedu.kr
Kids really enjoy doing the roleplays, dressing up and doing some drama. I don’t think they take acting classes in school here (Korea).

as soon as you put it up … used it with a seven year old girl who does private lessons alone…(she pretty good in English…) We read the book and then played the song…then we talked about the differences…It was a great lesson!

I was waiting for this one. my students and parents always ask me what is a gingerbread house? and then I always go back and talk about the ginger bread man, now its here and funny too, my son keep asking me to play it again LOL yeah its that funny, wait till the kids get to see and hear it in class. I like the ending : ).
