The keen eyed amongst you might have noticed 4 new picture books on the site over the weekend. Some of them I wrote in 2006 and had on the beta test forum, but hadn’t linked up from the main site. Sorry about that, but thanks to Gaz for reminding me!
How to teach?
As usual you do the normal Genki English lesson for that theme, then use the picture book in the next lesson as a “special prize”. As you’ve done the song and game the kids will be able to understand all the English in the book, which is hugely motivating! Plus of course there’s always a twist at the end with the Genki English picture books! Enjoy!
Oh, and as usual everyone can see the picture books online – so you can give the URL out as homework – and members can download the pdf version for class. If you’re not a member yet, get your Teacher’s Set or Download Pack order in soon (or even the Japanese Superpack order if you want your school to pay) as we’re about to enter silly season as everyone goes back to school and we get swamped with orders!
P.S. September is the time I use to write new materials, so if you have any requests for picture books then please write them in the comments!
P.P.S. After spending all day doing Youtube versions of the books with narrations (which I figured would be easier for people to use) now I’m thinking I prefer the big, clear, bright versions like with the other books. What do you think?
Thanks ! These are great. And Yes! It is important to have the narrations so kids can do them at home.
The only thing I was wondering is the “Genki English” in the bottom. I think it is a little too big.
But else GREAT!
I really love the creepy-crawlies theme book!! Though, I’m actually thinking I might make it up as a set of double-sided flashcards instead. They’d be really great for introducing the vocab ~
School returns for me on 7th September. All these topics are covered in just about each class I teach so I’m looking forward to having the books and the youtube videos to use now.
As for other topics – autumn is a big one in one of the schools I teach in, with each teacher giving 2 or 3 weeks of term time to cover it. Any suggestions welcome 🙂
As for requests:
I would be happy with :
“It’s not bad it’s good”
“How much”
“Breakfast”
“Rockstar”
“Can you speak English”
Sorry, this is pretty much, but maybe some requested are double or more, …
Thanks
THANK YOU Richard! They’re great!
Excellent!! A story linked to Doctor, Doctor would be most welcome.
I’d like to have the picture books which others requested too. Especially “What do you want to be?”
If you would put reasons (because I want to…/ because I like…/ because I can…), it would be a great review.
As for the style of the books, either will be fine with me. But as Margit said, Genki English.Com in the Youtube version may be a little too big and kids might be confused where to read.
Richard, I love the books. They are always a huge hit and I try to fit them in whenever I can! The Daily Yomiuri in Japan recently came out with a study that reinforces what I have read about numerous times. Having access to books is a good indicator of how well students do in school.
Your books do a superb job in cementing what the students learn in the song in a context that is fun and memorable.
I love the requests, especially Yumiko’s idea of tying in the jobs with like, can, and want! I also like the ‘good not bad’ ‘What would you like?’ and ‘Doctor Doctor’
Just to add a few more ideas to your full plate,
I would love an intro to the third person. something along the lines of Baby Monkey likes…. or perhaps something with Baby Monkey eats/drinks/dances…
Picture books look really good. By the way Happy Belated Birthday Genki English. I didn’t get a chance to post a comment before I couldn’t anymore. Talk about a blast from the past.
The site is looking more and more beautiful as time progresses. You put a lot of sweat, blood, and tears into GE and it has really paid off.
