I've always had a problem trying to figure out an easy way to teach Family
Members. The original "Monkey Family" song was pretty much universally
deemed to be "way too hard to teach". Hence last year I did the
Baby Monkey Remix, which is a lot simpler and very much liked, but I couldn't
come up with any actions or gestures. Today I finally found something simple
that works, you simply put a picture of each family member on each wall
of the class. Then as you introduce each one, you simply point at them
as you sing, going round the classroom. The teacher does it first, then
the kids. It's very easy to do and easy to remember.
Then for the game, I've been trying the idea of using the Sticky Fingers
game, but was wondering what question to use. Needless to say it was staring
me in the face. If you ever show your kids any photos from back home the
question they always ask is "Who's this?". So there we go, that's
the question for the game!
1. Three or four kids come to the front and each take hold of one of the
teacher's fingers.
2. Choose one "magic family member" e.g. grandma.
3. Everyone shouts out gWho's this?h
4. The teacher says "This is " plus one of the family members.
5. If the teacher says the magic family member, the kids who are holding
the teacher's fingers let go and run to the nearest wall.
6. If the teacher tags them before they make it to the wall, they are out!
7. If the teacher says a word other than the magic word and the kids let
go of the teacher's fingers, they are out!
It's amazing that just changing these few little things changes the theme
from one of the toughest to one of the easiest to teach!
The rest of the Japanese version of this newsletter is taken up with details
of the forthcoming shows and workshops. The only one that is in English
is a mini workshop in Fukuoka on September 9th. In 2 hours I'm going to
try and go through all the songs and games from CD7. Please pop along if
you can and we'll probably have an informal coffee shop gathering afterwards
( which may turn into beers if we go on long enough!). Full details are
on the schedule page at:
http://genkienglish.net/oxford.htm
From November I'm going to be in Europe, if you'd like to organise a workshop
in your town then please get in touch. Usually all you need is to get together
a dozen or so teachers and a place to hold the workshop.
Then there'll be another workshop in Germany on the last weekend in November. More details will be available nearer the time.
