Reviewing is one of the most important parts of a lesson. Β Rather than “islands” of English that don’t link up, you want to try and make “pancakes” where each lesson is reviewed in the next one. Β I’ve written a whole big article on this “Reviewing and how to do it” but the basic threeΒ techniquesΒ are:
- Review the song from the previous lesson (it would be cool to review every previous song, but usually we don’t have time so one is fine)
- Use the Warm Up Game, but not just commands, also ask all the questions you’ve studied until now e.g. “What do you think of ….?” etc. and the class answer all together.
- When you’ve done around 7 or 8 Genki English Lessons then you can start doing the Lines Game. Β Just check out this video of the teachers doing it in Beijing!

I tried it a couple of times last year…not very successfully..Now I know why? I gave them too much time to think!

Indeed, it has to go quickly. That’s part of the ‘good atmosphere’ of the game. If you are enthousiastic and asking quick questions, the children also ‘get’ into the game and answer quickly.
Children like it fast and flashy!
I usually do a Line game at the beginning of each lesson; it works wonders for the review of past themes and the kids love the “game” feeling of it!

I used to do this at the Junior high,but it really depended on the students.
I now work at 7 ‘shogakko’ so I try to check out your page every couple of days!
After seeing the video and it jogging my memory I thought I would give it a go. It went down VERY well,especially with the 6th graders!

I love the lines game. (My kids do, too!) I especially love that it has a little competition in it – be the first to answer! Quick! – but it also gives every child a chance to win! This is wonderful because I have a few kids who are good at English, they really are, but their little brains just don’t process information at the same rate as their companions. Thankfully, there are three or four of them, so they all end up in a group at the end, and they pretty much all get the answer right at about the same time, so I declare a four-way tie! π
