4. And Finally
Hello,
Even though I'm currently in Europe where there seems to be pretty much
nothing going on for Halloween, in stark contrast to the US and Asia which
is full of Halloween stuff, this month we have a Genki Halloween special.
Enjoy...
1. Game of the Month: I saw a scary .....
This is a bit of a memory game. First of all teach some Halloween vocab
using the Happy Halloween song (from CD6) and picture cards.
http://www.genkienglish.net/halloweensong.htm
Then ....
1. Put the class into teams.
2. The front kid from each team comes to the front and they stand facing
each other.
3. The first child says "Look, there's a ...."
4. You hold up one Halloween picture card and the first child says what
is on the card. e.g. "Look, there's a witch".
5. You then hold up another card in front of the first card (so all they
can see is the new card)
6. The second kid says "Look, there's a witch and a ..." plus
whatever is on the new card e.g. "Look, there's a witch and a wizard".
7. You put up another card (so they can't see the previous ones).
8. The first kid then has to say "Look, there's a witch and a wizard
and a ..." plus whatever is on the newest card.
9. Keep going until someone makes a mistake.
10. The person who made the mistake is out, sits down and the next person
from their team takes their place.
11. Reset the game and start back from step 3 with a new order of cards.
As you can tell this is for slightly older kids, and after a few rounds
you can add in more English e.g. "Last night I went to a haunted house
and I saw a scary......".
The only thing to watch out for is if you have any genius kids in the class
you might need to prepare dozens of cards. A good idea is to reuse any
vocab cards from the previous lessons. This does make it quite funny with
sentences such as "Last night I went to a haunted house and a I saw
a scary witch and a scary wizard and a scary ghost and a scary banana and
a scary poodle and a scary potato".
2. Other (simpler) Halloween Ideas
How many candies?
- Put a load of candies in a jar and the kids have to guess, in English,
how many there are. Once they get the magic number, they get a candy each.
Use "higher" and "lower" to give them hints if you
like. If you're in a public school you might have to use stickers or something
instead of food.
* How heavy is the pumpkin?
- Similar to the above game, the kids guess how heavy the pumpkin, or Jack
o'Lantern, is. Great to link in with maths lessons ( e.g. grams vs. kilograms,
analogue vs. digital scales etc.)
* Pesky Hound - Build a skeleton Game
- Similar to the "
Body Building Game" on the site. Ask the kids some review questions. Whoever gets the
answer correct gets to roll a dice. If they roll a "1", they
can draw the head of their team's skeleton on the board, "2"
let's them draw an arm, "3" is a leg, "4" is a foot,
"5" is a "hand" and "6" is the "dog
card" where a pesky hound comes and steals one of the bones they've
already drawn. First team to draw 1 head, 2 arms, 2 legs, 2 hands and 2
feet is the winner.
* Make a Pumpkin Face
- Use the
Make a Face song from CD6, then do a version of the
Make a Face game where the kids are blind fold and have to put cut-out eyes, nose
and mouth onto a giant jack o'Lantern you draw on the board.

3. Can I play? & Talking Halloween Picture Books
On the Genki English site there's a new picture book, to use with the "
Can I play...?" theme. The narrated version is
online for your students to listen to and teachers (or parents) who are members
of the
CD owners Club can
print out a copy for your class.

I've also added in narrations for the
Happy Halloween picture book, again the full version is online for your students to enjoy.

New picture books are in development, and as usual if you have any requests
then please
send them in, you never know I might have just what you are looking for sitting here
on my hard drive!
4. And Finally....
There have been a few extra things coming on the site over the last month,
have a look at my blog for more details.

And we've also launched the DVD version of the Kids English series. Full
details are on the site. You might also have seen the lead actor from these
DVDs in Fox's House the other week.

I'm on a mini tour of Europe for the next couple of months but there's
still plenty to come on the site and as usual whenever I am away from the
office the staff are there to help out and send off your CD or DVD orders
ASAP!
Be genki,
Richard
